Clan Hay Badge, Scottish Clan Hay

Clan Hay Badge, Scottish Clan Hay

SKU: CLAN0050

The Hay origins are in northern France, and branches of the family settled in England shortly after the Norman Conquest. The first Hays appeared in Scotland about the middle of the 12th century. The Hays are one of the major clans of Scotland, whose Chiefs, the Earls of Erroll, have been hereditary Lords High Constable of Scotland since Sir Gilbert Hay of Erroll was rewarded with that office after the Battle of Bannockburn by King Robert the Bruce.

During the Anglo-Scottish Wars the Clan Hay suffered very heavy casualties in the Battle of Flodden in 1513. Another Hay, also named Sir Gilbert, was a Scottish knight who fought for Joan of Arc during the Hundred Years' War.

The Clan Hay remained loyal to the Stuarts in both the Jacobite rising of 1715 and the Jacobite rising of 1745. With the collapse of Jacobitism, the Hays became loyal British subjects, and many Hays were involved in expanding the British Empire.

Each item begins as a piece of bronze sheet metal.  After the pattern is transferred to the metal, the piece is etched in a salt-water solution.  The piece is then hand cut, filed and sanded. The pin back is soldered on. The badge is then cleaned, a patina applied then a clear polymer coating is applied. A long process but well worth it.
