The shield knot symbol is as its name suggests a symbol of protection. It bears a certain resemblance to the solar cross. The knot has been used by many different cultures throughout history including Celts and Vikings. As with the Troll Cross, the Shield knot was a token of love. It offered hope and security to the family waiting for the return of one of its members.
This piece is brass.
Viking Brooch, Shield Knot Variation Pin
Each item begins as a piece of sheet metal, copper, bronze, brass or nickel. The pattern was transferred to the metal with a rolling mill from an original piece I etched in a salt-water solution. The piece is hand cut, sanded, and polished. A patina, clear polymer coating applied and a pin attached to the back with adhesive.
